Flight UK Premiere – Denzel Washington!

Flight UK Premiere

17th January 2013

Now, there’s times when I feel it a bit silly to be out in rather extreme weather, and Thursday was one of these occasions. No one in their right mind would stand in Leicester Square in below freezing temperatures for a film premiere. I, however, don’t fit into that category. Not only that, this is the second time I’ve done it in 2013. Is it worth it? Yes, it is actually.

This time was for the UK premiere of Flight; Robert Zemeckis‘ new Oscar-nominated film starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, John Goodman and Kelly Reilly. Robert, Denzel and Kelly were due to attend (gutted there was no Don, I’d love to meet him one day). But I’ll happily take Denzel, one of the finest actors out there right now in my opinion (I seem to say that a lot, though).

Arrived to what was a strangely small set up, very small infact; it seemed totally bizarre to have two Oscar winners and such a small setup – I’d seen larger ones for much smaller events with no one of nearly as big fame. Ah well; got my place and waited in what felt like Arctic conditions (despite being wrapped up in just a few layers). That probably wasn’t a good idea, I went to see Silver Linings Playbook (awesome film, Jennifer Lawrence I love you too much) and was getting rather hot in thermals! Anyways, arrivals started at about 6.20, with the stars of the film introduced together, and doing press first.

Might as well start with the bad bit; Robert Zemeckis. For such a small set up, he signed very little, and I was not one of them. Gutted at the time, as I’d loved to have added him to my collection. But hey, I always believe in second chances in this hobby, so it won’t get to me.

Not to dwell, spotted former rugby player, and Rugby World Cup winner with England Kyran Bracken, who happily signed an index card for me. He was followed by former footballer and current manager of the Welsh national side Chris Coleman, who signed an index card and posed for a photo with me. A Crystal Palace legend (of sorts), and a new autograph for my no-longer-that-important-to-me football collection.

Kelly Reilly came over not too long after. Known for her roles in Sherlock Holmes, Mrs Henderson Presents and Eden Lake, she kindly signed and dedicated an index card for me, and posed for a photo. She seemed friendly, if not rather cold!

She was followed by the star of the evening, the legend that is Denzel Washington. I don’t think I need to give him much of an introduction, but anyways; a two time Oscar winner and star of Training Day, Glory, Safe House, American Gangster, Deja Vu, Inside Man, Malcolm X, and the Hurricane, he’s a pretty big deal. He couldn’t have been much nicer really! He signed and dedicated my autograph book, and posed for a photo with me. He spent a fair bit of time talking and signing, even jumping a barrier to get to more fans, much to the annoyance of his security. Really rather impressed, just a shame his director couldn’t be the same.

There were a few other celebrity guests, but no one of any real significance to me at all. Took one of the premiere posters home with me (always fun trying to get them on the train), but a nice souvenir to add to the collection. Plus, it appears I was quite lucky, as snow has now hit London and the city’s pretty much turned to a standstill. Which is a pain, as I SO wanted to be out this weekend (cough Sally Field, cough). Now I’ve got to wait till 8am tomorrow to see if she has cancelled her scheduled appearance. I hope not!
